Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originated in China and can be traced back as far as 3000 years ago. The first medical document, “黄帝内经” (the Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor), laid the foundation for the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. This book introduced key concepts of TCM such as “Qi,” “Yin and Yang,” and the “five elements”.
The core principle of TCM is defined by its holistic concept of “harmony between man and nature”; thus, we look at a patient as a whole rather than just the disease. This holistic view in medicine allows us to stimulate the body’s natural healing potential to restore its internal biological balance.
In TCM, various diagnostic methods are used to assess the body’s state and constitution. The 4 types of diagnostic methods are:
Inspect 望诊
Olfact & Auscultate 闻诊
Inquire 问诊
Palpate 切诊
Everyone has their own unique body constitution, which can be affected by factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environment. With these methods, we then diagnose and develop a tailored treatment plan. Various types of treatments are adopted in TCM, from internal treatments such as herbal medication to external treatments such as cupping, acupuncture, scraping, and tuina.
